World Streethawker Food Congress

So one of M's former students (and soon to be new master's student), put together an excursion to a special event hosted by Anthony Bourdain (or at least he is here for it): The World Streetfood Jamboree.  Arun, Helen, M and I headed down to the Singapore flyer with some former UB Communication students to take part in the festivities.

Essentially, you pay a fee to get in, and you can purchase street vender food from around the world. There were a lot of SouthEast Asian countries represented, such as Malayasia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore. There were others as well though: US, Mexico, Norway, and India. I have to say it was amazing, and I tried some really interesting and great foods. Most of what I could eat was Indian,  but it was different from any Indian food I have had before.

The general scene...

The gang's all here...

M ordering a pork sandwich from a food truck based out of Portland Oregon. He loved it.

This dish was amazing! It is Indian street food just like hotdogs are US street food, and this cart was from India. It is called Behlpuri, and I have never had anything like it before. It was puffed rice and sev (a crispy noodle) tossed with chutney, peanuts, tomatoes, potatoes, and chilies - so good!! Here's a recipe

This was another excellent Indian food - this time from a cart in Singapore. Apparently, they are one of the few carts left in Singapore that still press the pancake by hand. This is Appam cheese and egg. It was so strange and wonderful because it was a mix of sweet and savory. Essentially, it is a crispy pancake filled with egg, cheese, coconut, and sugar - man was it addictive! Another recipe (maybe I'll learn how to make all this stuff!)

Helen posing with M's favorite food of the night - a fish taco straight from a Mexican food cart, La Guerrerense. This food truck is actually rated by Anthony Bourdain as one of the 100 best places to eat in the world.

Helen and me goofing around with her food from Norway.
This was a yummy banana desert with sticky coconut rice. It was also covered in a sweet sauce and sesame seeds. I loved the little lady cooking them. She was adorable!

This is was one of my many favorite foods- Kue Pancong. And yes, it is a desert. It is a coconut cake - I guess coconut was the food of the day for me - covered in sugar. It was so very delicious!

Me posing with my coconut cake!

Needless to say, I ended this night one stuffed lady! I am hoping to take Vickie and Kevin on Sunday because I want to eat some more of these delicious treats!

  1. No, but one of M's students saw him wandering around Singapore. We did get to see him a couple of months ago in Buffalo. He put on a stand-up type of show. We thought it was really good (even though he ripped on vegetarians).
