Free my Internet!

Yesterday, Singaporeans held a protest about the government's decision to make news outlets only publish what they approve. The group that organized it is calling themselves Free My Internet. This means sites like Yahoo news can only post stories that the Singapore government approves and edits. Read more here and here. Here's a NYT piece on it. Interestingly, I just tried to find an article about Yahoo agreeing to the regulations, but low and behold - it's no where to be found over here...

Singaporeans are only allowed to publicly gather and protest in one place, Hong Lim Park or Speaker's Corner. Foreigners are actually forbidden from attending such protests. Sometimes you are reminded just how much we take for granted in the US, and how lucky we are.

M and I briefly checked in on the protest (not to engage in it, but to see what it was like), and it was an amazing thing to witness. It actually may have been the first protest I have ever seen in person. We made it time for the last speaker- he was incredibly enthusiastic!

By the way, I am somewhat afraid to post this blog, but M says it will be fine 😳

My favorite protest sign! I love grumpy cat!! I also found it interesting that he was covering his face.
